I’m kinda getting obsessed with new library buildings. My library is due to be renovated/rebuilt over the next few years so I am more than a little interested in how other libraries are rebuilding and the sort of spaces they are incorporating into the building plan.

Bankstown Library in NSW is rebuilding at the moment.

THE Bankstown Library and Knowledge Centre is set to become a new hub of arts and culture in western Sydney when it opens late next month.

As well as an extensive library and computer resources, the $20 million building will also house the 300-seat Bryan Brown Theatre, a cafe, meeting rooms and an exhibition space.

Mayor Khal Asfour said the new centre would be opened by one lucky local school student chosen from hundreds who entered a competition last year, where entrants were asked to say what they loved most about their library.

“There is no other structure like this in Bankstown and is something our community should be proud of,” Cr Asfour said.

The current Bankstown Library at 62 The Mall, will close early next month for the transfer of books and equipment.

The centre will include books, meeting rooms, an exhibition space and cafe.

The council will use the older building as a community hub for residents to access a number of services.

This will involve the relocation of the council’s Community Services and Bankstown Business Advisory Service operations from Civic Tower on Rickard Rd.
