When I first read this (many, many years ago) it was called “Ten Little Niggers” and it was my first experience of the ‘locked room’ genre of crime fiction.

And it was the first Agatha Christie novel I read.

Ten people have been invited to a house party on a remote island off the coast of Devon. Upon arriving, they are told that their hosts, a Mr and Mrs U.N. Owen (Ulick Norman Owen and Una Nancy Owen), are currently away, but the guests will be attended to by Mr. and Mrs. Rogers.

After dinner a gramophone record plays, accusing each guest of murder, & The guests quickly realize they have been tricked into coming to the island. The storm brewing outside traps them on the island as the boat which regularly delivers supplies is docked by the storm.

One by one the guests are killed until all ten are dead. And therein lies the mystery. If there were only ten people on the island, and all ten have been murdered, who is the killer?

The original title “ten little niggers’ was taken from the childrens rhyme of the same name. It was later renamed ‘ten little indians’ or ‘ten little soldiers’.

I think i still have my paperback with the golliwog cover.
